Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan

Built in 1801-1811 by architect Voronikhin to house the miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. This icon appeared miraculously in the town of Kazan in 1579 and was credited with many miracles including freeing Moscow from the Poles in 1612, during the Time of Troubles. This cathedral is shaped like a cross, and the facade facing Nevskiy Prospekt is linked with a 96-column colonnade. Statues of Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolli, the heroes of the Napoleonic war, are next to the cathedral.

Cathedral of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood

Built in 1883-1907 by the order of Alexander III on the spot where his father Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. Modeled on St. Basil's Church in Moscow. The Cathedral houses mosaic icons by Nesterov, Vasnetsov and others in the style of both Byzantine and modern icon painting. Among the most important elements of the cathedral is the shrine constructed on the very spot where the Emperor was fatally wounded.

Cathedral of the Transfiguration

Built in 1743-1754 by Trezzini. Holy relics such as an icon of the Savior painted by Simon Ushakov and icon of the Virgin Mary All Sorrow and Joy are kept in the cathedral.

Built in 1818-1858 by architect Montferrand. Named for St. Isaac of Dalmatia, whose burial service coincided with Peter the Great's birth. Works by sculptors Vitali and Klodt, artists Bryullov and Bruni, bell master Stukolkin and others. Cathedral is adorned with monolithic columns of Karelian granite and walls of marble, and with statues of Evangelists and Apostles. Dome terrace (101,5 meters) has the best view of St. Petersburg.

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral

St. Peter & Paul Cathedral

Oldest cathedral in St. Petersburg with tall gilded spire (122 m) and beautiful bells, built in 1712-1733 by architect Trezzini on the grounds of Peter and Paul Fortress. Burial vault of Peter the Great and other Russian tsars are in the fortress.

St. Trinity Izmaylovskiy Cathedral

Built in 1828-1835 by Stasov, cupola designed by Bazen. Built to commemorate one of the oldest regiments in Russia, life-guards of Izmaylovo. The cathedral houses banners of the regiment and military trophies.
