Founded by Peter the Great in July 1710 on the spot where according to the legend Prince Alexander (later nicknamed Nevskiy) won a great victory over the Swedes in 1240. In 1797 it was given the status of "Lavra" (monastery of the high rank). It is a complex of 16 religious buildings including Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Nunnery and Necropolis.
